Description

עברית בעברית הוא חוג ללימוד עברית המיועד לילדים בגלאי 2-12 .

הלמידה נעשית באמצעות פעילויות חוויתיות,אומנות, שירים ומשחקים והכל בשפה העברית.

התוכנית מיועדת לילדי ישראלים ולילדים שהוריהם מעונינים בהקנית השפה העברית במסגרת שאינה דתית.

המורות בחוג ישראליות ובעלות ניסיון עבודה עם ילדים בגיל הרך.

Founded in January, 2006, Ivrit b'Ivrit is for children ages 2-12, learning to speak Hebrew in a fun after school activity through games, songs, art and more.

This program is intended for Israelis and for parents who want Hebrew language immersion for their children.

The instructors speak Hebrew translating only when necessary; vocabulary focuses on every day lives (clothing, food, home, school, parts of the body, etc.) and children are encouraged to respond in Hebrew.

Ivrit b'Ivrit is not a religious program.  Holidays are celebrated, however, through art and/or song.

LocationWe use rooms at Beth El located in La Jolla.  Ivrit b'Ivrit participants do not have to be members of Beth El.

We are working on plans for a Carmel Valley location as well and hope to have one available for the Fall Session, 2008.

Class Size
6 - 8 children/1 instructor. To date,
50% are children of Israelis, 50% are from non-Hebrew speaking homes.

The program builds on past sessions, but reviews for children starting anew.

All funds go to the teacher or facility, Jennie Starr volunteers her time building programs.

Three Types of Classes

Ivrit b’Ivrit (Children) - Conversational Hebrew

Hebrew in Hebrew.  Grouped by age; 3-6, 7-9, 10-12.  Kids learn to speak and use their existing Hebrew with an Israeli teacher through games, music and stories.  Great for Israeli children who no longer respond in Hebrew and for children new to Hebrew.

Ivrit b’Ivrit (Children)  - Reading & Writing Hebrew

Hebrew in Hebrew.  Grouped by age; 5-6, 7-9, 10-12.  Kids learn their aleph bet, and to read and write using Israeli workbooks.  The program is conducted in Hebrew.  Children who are not fluent Hebrew speakers must also be enrolled in a Conversational Hebrew class.

Ivrit Family Class - Conversational Hebrew

Hebrew in Hebrew.  Parents and children ages 2-5.  Parent participation is required.  Families learn Hebrew together through songs, games and/or stories.  The class is less structured than the other Ivrit classes and is not curriculum based but is great fun.

Curriculum

Our experienced teachers build conversational skills lesson plans using as their foundation a curriculum written by Israelis.  Our teachers are supplementing the materials.

The curriculum, "Chalav U'dvash" was written by Israeli educators.
If you want to know more about the program visit:
http://www.chalav-udvash.org.il/

Parents are encouraged to send their children twice/week. Children learn more rapidly with 2 hrs/week and the program was designed to be used in that fashion.

The reading and writing materials are Israeli workbooks and the teachers supplement these too in the reading and writing classes which are also conducted in Hebrew.

Children who enroll in Reading/Writing should be either fluent Hebrew speakers or enrolled simultaneously in an Ivrit b'Ivrit Conversational Class.
Hebrew Language Consultant

We consulted with a Hebrew language immersion consultant when we founded the program.  You can read more about her work and  answers to frequently asked questions in the Q&A  below.

Aviva Kadosh, the BJE’s Hebrew language Consultant, together with a team of educators provide ongoing field supervision to teachers and evaluation tools to principals in schools that are offering Hebrew Language Immersion in their pre-schools and early childhood grades.

Sample Class Description

Each lesson has a theme of daily activity. A recent lesson about bedtime included games and songs which were all related to bedtime, a creative pretend/acting section involving going to bed and all the things we do before hand (brushing teeth, reading stories, etc.) and the art project was drawing and cutting out stars and moons to create a mobile.  A puppet show with a flashlight  (panas) in the dark was used to teach the vocabulary around darkness, light, etc.
